Hold on to your Milanos!
Pepperidge Farm's parent company Campbell Soup has issued a warning that due to "supply constraints" there may be a shortage of their cookies on store shelves this holiday season.
The issue has to do with labor shortages due to the coronavirus pandemic and the increase in demand for cookies as more people remain in their homes, Campbell's Chief Executive Officer Mark Clouse said on an earnings call, according to Bloomberg News.
Complicating matters is that unlike Goldfish crackers or their soups, the company's cookie division does not outsource to third-party manufacturers, so ramping up production of Bordeauxs, Linzers and Milanos is much harder.
"This portfolio is unique with proprietary recipes, and therefore we do not outsource production," Campbell said in a statement to the outlet. "We've prioritized increasing supply and are already leveraging capacity opportunities across the network to meet increases in demand and maximize availability."
The company has seen an 8.7% increase in demand for their cookies over the last 13 weeks and called the upward consumption trend "sustained and very strong."
Overall, cookie demand in the United States has increased by 25% since the start of the pandemic, according to data analytics agency Top Data. In addition, the agency found that one third of Americans eat between 24 to 48 cookies a month, while 40% eat more than that amount.
