New Jersey’s Fairleigh Dickinson made March Madness history on Friday night, shocking No. 1 seeded Purdue in the first round to become just the second 16 seed ever to topple a No. 1 in the history of the tournament.
Making the Knights’ win even more improbable, FDU had to also win its First Four game days before facing the Big Ten titans in Purdue, but still were able to win what many say is now the greatest upset in NCAA Tournament history.
Safe to say, the Boilermakers didn’t take the loss well.
In a photo that quickly went viral, WISH TV’s Angela Moryan shared a picture on Twitter of the whiteboard in Purdue’s locker room, which sported a massive hole in the top left corner, clearly from someone punching or throwing something through it in anger after the improbable loss.
There is likely plenty of frustration for Purdue’s basketball program, as the Boilermakers have now been bounced by double-digit seeded teams in three straight March Madness appearances. last year, it was another New Jersey Cinderella in the 15th seeded Saint Peter’s Peacocks of the MAAC taking down Purdue. On Friday, it was the NEC darlings that didn’t even win their conference tournament, but rather earned a tourney bid by default due to conference champion Merrimack not yet completing its transition into Division I.
