It has been 16 years since Randy Moss infamously pretended to drop his drawers and fake moon the fans at Lambeau Field, but the Hall of Famer recently offered some more background into why he did what he did.

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tommy Kramer tweeted videos of Moss, gathered with friends around a campfire, explaining the leadup to that game and finally the faux moon itself.

Moss begins telling everybody how he could not play against the Packers in their first matchup that season because of a hamstring injury. When they got to Lambeau Field he immediately felt the animosity from the fans despite not being able to play.

“So, the first matchup was in Lambeau, nice beautiful day, we go in there – the fans, the people tailgating are talking so much crap,” Moss said. “…I’m hobbled; watching my brothers warm up. The Wisconsin University band comes down with their horn department they got [spelt] in their horns, ‘Where you at Moss?’”

Moss was in disbelief and then the Vikings lost the game. Three weeks later, the Vikings lost to the Packers again while Moss was still unable to play. He added that the Metrodome was filled with Packers fans chanting “Go Pack Go.”

So, when he got word that the Vikings drew the Packers in the Wild Card Round of the 2005 playoffs, Moss was fired up.

“I said, ‘you got to be kidding me.’ … All the little bit of animosity up to that point they 0-2’d us I said, ‘you know what, I get to play this game,’” he said.

“As we go into Lambeau … there’s probably about 10 white a---s sitting over there they got all their pants down,” he continued. “Nothing but white moons all lined up. We’re on the bus going, ‘Oh My God!’ We’re sitting there laughing.

“If you remember my touchdown, I scored the touchdown that really put the game away. One of the wide receivers came over to try and give me some love, … I pushed him off. I don’t do that. I give my brothers some love. I pushed him off and said I need this moment. I need this moment. I still haven’t forgot ‘Where you at Moss?’… I score that game-winning touchdown … I nudged him out there. For that stuff y’all did, y’all taking this [mimicks pulling down his pants].”

The gesture immediately caught backlash, with announcer Joe Buck describing it as a “disgusting act.”

Moss was surprised about the reaction and subsequent fine he got for it.

“My mindset is ‘I’m not gonna pull my pants down, I’m gonna fake moon them,’” Moss said. “When I get back to Winter Park, I get to the truck, they’re like Randy, Randy. I said ‘what?’ They gonna fine you, boy. I’m like ‘c’mon now.’ I was thinking it was all fun ... Think about it … a late hit, unsportsmanlike, $7,500 first offense. I had no offenses. I ain’t been doing nothing crazy.”

Thus led to another all-time Moss moment, when he told reporters he’d pay the fine with “straight cash, homey.”
