Noah Syndergaard’s career with the Mets is reportedly nearing an end.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the righty is “making progress” towards a one-year deal with the Angels, which could be finalized after Wednesday, which is the deadline for Syndergaard to accept his qualifying offer from New York.
Syndergaard has an $18.4 million qualifying offer waiting from the Mets, one which Michael Conforto already declined. Back in September, the pitcher told reporters that he was “fairly confident” that he and the Mets would reach an agreement to return in 2022.
Syndergaard was an All-Star in 2016 and has boasted a fastball averaging over 98 mph across his first five big-league seasons. He pitched to a 3.03 ERA in 25 starts in 2018, then took a step back in 2019 before Tommy John surgery took him out of the 2020 campaign and almost all of 2021. Setbacks in his recovery limited Syndergaard to just two appearances in 2021, pitching two innings and allowing two runs. Still, having just turned 29 years old, he should have the ability to return to his old form when healthy.
If Syndergaard does indeed sign with the Halos and declines New York’s qualifying offer, the Mets would receive a compensatory draft pick.
