RG3 is OUT at the Worldwide Leader, as ESPN has let Robert Griffin III go as part of budget cuts on Thursday, per a report in the Athletic.
Griffin did not comment to The Athletic, but did post a clip on X of a scene from the movie “Friday” where a character asks, ‘how’d you get fired on your day off?’
The news, perhaps coincidentally, comes one day after the former Heisman Trophy winner took to Twitter to take a shot at colleague Paul Finebaum’s statement on First Take Tuesday that Florida State would end 2024 unranked due to a ‘hangover’ from last season – more vitriol from his take about FSU being left out of the CFP last season.
"Anyone who is throwing shade at or trying to take cheap shots at Florida State for being left out of the College Football Playoff last year must be out of touch with reality," RG3, whose wife was a track and field star for the Seminoles in the mid-2010s, wrote.
Perhaps further coincidence, or irony, is that the other name reportedly let go in the cuts was Sunday NFL Countdown host and reporter Sam Ponder, whose husband, Christian, played QB at FSU before spending six NFL seasons with three teams.
According to The Athletic’s report, these were straight budget cuts, but not expected to be the start of another round of mass layoffs like the 2023 exodus that saw Suzy Kolber, Steve Young, Jeff Van Gundy, and Keyshawn Johnson let go among nearly two dozen departures.
RG3 had two years left on his contract and, despite being removed from the Monday Night Countdown panel, was still a top college game broadcast analyst, last season working with Jets radio voice Bob Wischusen.
