(670 The Score) The Cubs have declared themselves as buyers committed to making a run this season, striking a move nearly 24 hours from the MLB trade deadline.
The Cubs have acquired third baseman Jeimer Candelario from the Nationals in exchange for prospects DJ Herz and Kevin Made, the team announced before Monday night's game against the Reds.
Candelario, 29 is hitting .258 with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs over 99 games this season. He came up with the Cubs and played 16 games with the team from 2016-'17 before being traded to the Tigers in 2017. The Cubs acquired left-hander Justin Wilson and catcher Alex Avila in the trade that sent Candelario to Detroit.
Candelario was playing the first year of a one-year, $5-million deal with the Nationals and is set to become a free agent after this season. He has a 3.3 WAR on the season, which would be second on the Cubs behind only All-Star shortstop Dansby Swanson.
Herz is a left-handed pitcher who was an eighth-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. He had a 3.97 ERA over 14 starts this season at Double-A Tennessee. Made, an undrafted signing out of the Dominican Republic, had a .241 average this season for High-A South Bend.
The Cubs are expected to pursue relief pitching options in potential trades, according to 670 The Score's Bruce Levine.
The MLB trade deadline is 5 p.m. CT Tuesday.
