As NFL players continue to be hit with suspensions for violating the league’s gambling restrictions, Sal says players should be allowed to bet on themselves and their own teams, so long as it is a bet to win or succeed.
“The rules are in place. You can’t gamble,” Sal said. “However, I do believe it should be legal for NFL players to gamble on themselves or their own teams. I actually think that would make a better product for the league.
“One issue as fans, we want the players to care as much as they do…we want to see them give it everything they’ve got and be extra motivated. If they’re betting whatever amount on themselves or on their team to win, what better than that?”
Jerry raised a concern about players potentially altering their strategy on the field if they are going for personal landmarks, which could impact the game.
“On their team to win, I understand,” Jerry said. “I think you get into a really big gray area in terms of betting on themselves in terms of certain benchmarks, because now it’s all about you.”
So, Sal was willing to settle for just allowing players to bet on their own teams to win.
“They should make it mandatory that players bet on their team!” Sal said. “That would make sports even better! If players bet on their own team, now I know they care as much as I do.”
