Shaq on Cam Newton's sexist comments: 'This ain't the 60s or 70s'

nfl

Shaquille O'Neal is imploring Cam Newton to get with the times.

The free agent quarterback was rightfully criticized by many for overtly sexist comments he made on a podcast this week.

"A bad bitch is a person who's just, 'Girl I'm a bad bitch, I'm doing this, I'm doing that, I look the part, but I don't act the part,'" Newton said in part. "It's a lot of women who are bad bitches -- and I say bitches in a way not to degrade a woman, but just to go off the aesthetic of what they deem as a boss chick.

"Now, a woman for me is, handling your own but knowing how to cater to a man's needs. And I think a lot of times when you get that aesthetic of, 'I'm a boss bitch,' it's like you know, you can't cook. You don't know how to be quiet. You don't know how to allow a man lead."

It's an antiquated line of thinking from the free-agent quarterback, who might have hurt his prospects of getting a decent opportunity if the NFL since teams might (key word: might) be reticent to bring someone in who isn't exactly revered right now, especially for a depth role.

During "The Big Podcast with Shaq" this week, O'Neal responded to the comments from Newton.

"Times have changed, and women are demanding their respect and you must give it to them, or else," O'Neal said. "This ain't the 60s or 70s. Be quiet, do all this – you've got women buying mansions and not living in them and getting new mansions, you've got women that are doing their own thing. You've got to show them their respect. And a true king doesn't have to go to a woman and say I am the boss. They should already know and you should already know. Also, a true king lets his woman lead.

"Like, if you look at the old ancient king movies, the king don't even say s–t. It's the queen that's calling war and doing this, that's because the king is like 'You lead, I'll just sit back and chill.' That's what true kings do, but women definitely are demanding their respect. All this be quiet and shut up, that ain't going to fly no more."

Prior to even this incident, Newton has gotten himself into hot water before for sexist comments he made towards a woman reporter during his first stint with the Carolina Panthers.

Now, Shaq didn't deliver the most full-throated condemnation of Newton's comments you'll find, but his overall point is correct. Newton would be well-advised to get with the times.
