There were many memorable moments in the career of Derek Jeter, but eight years ago today, he notched one of his first lasts.
On October 13, 2012, Jeter went 1-for-5 in Game 1 of the 2012 ALCS, an eventual 6-4 win for the Tigers over the Yankees in 12 innings. Jeter's hit was a single to right in the second inning – the quintessential Jeter-ian knock – but little did the world know that said single would be the final postseason hit of The Captain's career.
Of course, as you may remember, Jeter left that game in the 12th inning after suffering an ankle injury trying to make a play – an injury that turned out to be a broken ankle, and cost him the rest of that postseason and most of 2013.
The Yankees were swept by the Tigers in that ALCS and did not reach the postseason in 2013 or 2014, making Mr. November's final October memory a trip to the trainer's room; still, eight years later, Jeter's 200th and final playoff hit remains an MLB record…and is 72 more than second place.
And hey, 200 is a nice round number to go out on, right?
