One week prior to one of golf’s biggest tournaments, one of its biggest stars has bowed out. Tiger Woods announced on Twitter Tuesday that he will not be playing in next week’s U.S. Open at Brookline in Massachusetts.

The 46-year-old 15-time major champ said his body is not ready to compete. He does offer up information on when he does plan to play again however.

“I previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing in the @usopengolf as my body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf,” Woods wrote. “I do hope and plan to be ready to play in Ireland at @JPProAm and at @TheOpen next month. I’m excited to get back out there soon!”

The JP Pro-Am takes place July 4 and 5 in County Limerick, Ireland, while the Open Championship is July 14-17 at St. Andrews. Woods has won the Open Championship three times, including twice at the Old Course at St. Andrews. Woods last won a tournament in 2019 at The Masters.

It’s been a tough trip back to competitive golf for Woods after a major car accident in February, 2021. Woods sustained multiple leg injuries and had surgery for multiple broken bones and open fractures in his right leg.

Woods has played only in the two major championships so far in 2022, including the Masters where he finished 47th, and the PGA Championship which he withdrew from. Woods said he was too sore to continue. He has shown a significant limp while trying to play.
