Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal made waves last week when he said on his podcast that if the Patriots didn’t beat the Cardinals Monday night, there could be “a serious question about whether [Bill] Belichick is the future head coach of this team.”
The Patriots did beat the Cardinals, so it’s a moot point for now. But if Monday’s game was so important, it would stand to reason that the rest of this season is as well.
Could Robert Kraft really fire Belichick if things don’t go well over the next month? Ty Law isn’t buying it. In fact, the Patriots and Pro Football Hall of Famer laughed hysterically at the idea during his weekly appearance on The Greg Hill Show Tuesday morning.
“Bill Belichick ain’t going nowhere unless he says he wants to go somewhere,” Law said once he got done laughing. “If he’s gonna go to Mr.
Kraft and say, ‘I’m gonna step down,’ but there’s no way -- he’s got too much good credit in that organization to say, ‘OK, he’s gone.’ That’s not gonna happen. That’s just laughable to me.
“Coach Belichick, he’s been there for a long time. He might feel like it’s time to step down, I don’t know, but I can’t see Mr. Kraft saying, ‘We’re gonna go in another direction.’ I can’t see that one. That’s laughable to me. Like I said, he’s built up too much credit within the organization with this team and what he’s built for the last two decades, that he’s gonna write his own ticket. I think Mr. Kraft is gonna give him the send-off that he wants and let him walk off on his own terms.”
Law laughed again after hearing the audio of Bedard’s report.
“Greg Bedard, sir, I don’t know you, but your sources are terrible,” Law said. “He must’ve got his damn sources at the piggly-wiggly … Come on, man. Come on, Greg.”
Listen to the full interview with Law below. The discussion about Belichick's future begins at the 9:45 mark.
