Jim Harbaugh has his new defensive coordinator, who's a bit like his old.
Michigan is expected to hire Vanderbilt DC and former Baltimore Ravens assistant Jesse Minter, according to Pete Thamel. Minter will replace Mike Macdonald, who came to Michigan from the Ravens last offseason and returned to Baltimore last month.
In Minter's lone season at Vanderbilt, the team's defensive stats weren't pretty. The Commodores finished last in the SEC in both total defense and scoring defense, yielding 35.6 points and 457.7 yards per game.
But Minter's background with the Ravens, where he coached defense under John Harbaugh from 2017-20, should help Michigan's defense build on the foundation it laid under Macdonald.
The Wolverines were second in the Big Ten in total defense and scoring defense last season. Of course, Minter will have to find replacements for three potential first-round picks in Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo and Daxton Hill.
Minter, 38, started his coaching career at Notre Dame in 2006 and has also spent time at Cincinnati, Indiana State and Georgia State.
Harbaugh, who recommitted himself to Michigan last week after interviewing for the Minnesota Vikings head coaching vacancy, is also searching for a new offensive coordinator after the departure of Josh Gattis.
