Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett, who began his career at the University of Michigan in 2007, has died.
Mallett, 35, was pronounced dead at a Florida hospital after drowning at a beach, according to multiple reports.
Mallett started his college career with the Wolverines, making three starts during the 2007 season, including a 38-0 win over Notre Dame while filling in for the injured Chad Henne.
He then transferred to Arkansas, where his 62 touchdowns over two seasons led the New England Patriots selecting him in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
He spent six seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2017. He became the head football coach at White Hall High School in Arkansas in 2022.
"It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett," the White Hall School District said in a statement. "Coach Mallett was a beloved coach and educator. We ask that you remember his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers."
Circumstances surrounding the reported drowning were not immediately clear.
In a tweet, the Michigan football program said it "extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and former teammates of QB Ryan Mallett."
