In the end, Jim Harbaugh will likely stay at Michigan.
The university has offered him an extension that would keep him in Ann Arbor through 2026, according to The Athletic. And there is 'optimism inside Michigan' that the deal will be completed within the next week.
But Harbaugh hadn't accepted the offer as of Saturday evening, and here's why: "He's waiting to see if any NFL teams have interest in him as a head coach," according to the Free Press.
Harbaugh is said to have interest in two jobs, both of which could become available on Black Monday: the Jets and the Chargers. New York is all but certain to fire Adam Gase, while Los Angeles could decide to move on from Anthony Lynn.
Per the Free Press, "If Harbaugh doesn't draw interest from those teams, then he is expected to re-sign with Michigan."
Which brings us back to the top: Harbaugh isn't going anywhere. NFL teams haven't expressed interest in him "for the last few years," according to Jay Glazer. That's highly unlikely to change on the heels of the worst season of Harbaugh's six-year tenure at Michigan.
Indeed, according to a report from NFL Network, Harbaugh's name is "not considered to be on the front burner" for the Jets.
If and when Harbaugh signs an extension with Michigan, the deal is expected to reduce both his salary and his buy-out figure. He was the fourth highest-paid coach in college football this year, trailing only Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney and Ed Orgeron.
