Harbaugh hires longtime Ravens assistant as Michigan's QB coach

So Jim Harbaugh won't be Michigan's quarterbacks coach, after all.

Michigan has hired longtime Ravens assistant Matt Weiss to coach the quarterbacks, the university announced on Monday.

Weiss comes to the Wolverines after coaching Baltimore's running backs the past two seasons. He also coached the receivers in 2018 and the quarterbacks from 2016-17. He joined the Ravens' staff under John Harbaugh in 2008.

Weiss is the second assistant Harbaugh has poached from his brother's staff this offseason, joining new defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. Weiss also coached under Jim Harbaugh for three seasons at Stanford.

"I am really excited about reconnecting with Coach Matt Weiss," Harbaugh said in an official statement. "We have a great relationship from our time together at Stanford and he brings a great deal of experience coaching all three phases of the game in addition to his strength in the area of analytics and game strategy."

Harbaugh originally assumed the role of quarterbacks coach in January after former quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels wasn't retained. Michigan ranked 44th in the country last season in passing yards per game.

Now the job belongs to Weiss, whose biggest charge will be overseeing the development of J.J. McCarthy, the top-ranked QB recruit of Harbaugh's tenure. Michigan also returns incumbent starter Cade McNamara.

"I am excited about the opportunity to coach at the University of Michigan and help contribute to the winningest program in college football history," Weiss said "I look forward to reuniting with Coach Jim Harbaugh, learning our offensive system, and building relationships with the staff and student-athletes."
