John Beilein is returning to Michigan -- but staying in the NBA.

The former head coach of the Wolverines is joining the Pistons in the role of Senior Advisor Player Development, according to Marc Stein.

Beilein, 68, most recently coached the Cavaliers during the 2019-20 season, but his tenure ended after 14 wins in 54 games amid pushback from the team's veterans.

He was spotted frequently at Pistons games this season and should be a valuable resource for a roster with so many young players. Detroit is developing a new core as it attempts to build a long-term winner under GM Troy Weaver.

Player development is what Beilein was known for during his 13-year tenure at Michigan, where he became the program's winningest head coach. On top of the team's many accomplishments, Beilein sent 11 players to the NBA through the draft.

He left Michigan unexpectedly after the 2018-19 season to take the head coaching job with the Cavs, an opportunity he said he couldn't pass up.

Now he's coming back to the state where he made his mark, to help a new team reach old heights.
