Facing 0-4 ATS Start, Michigan Following Betting Struggles of Defending Champs

If Michigan doesn't cover the spread against USC in Week 4 — currently +5.5 in BetMGM's college football odds — they'll start the season with four straight losses against the spread, one shy of their total from last year's regular season and conference championship.

Barring ATS dominance over the next two and a half months, the Wolverines will be the latest team to have a drop in ATS winning percentage one year after winning the national championship.

Four of the first five champions in the College Football Playoff era actually improved against the spread a year later. But the four most recent champions have done worse the following season. And the bar hasn't been unrealistically high.

None of the last four champs covered more than eight games, including Georgia in 2022. The Bulldogs went 7-6 ATS (.538) during the 2022 regular season and SEC Championship. They covered only four times last year, posting the worst percentage (.346) of any defending champ in the CFP era.
