Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore is expected to be suspended for two games this season as part of self-imposed sanctions by the university for the sign-stealing scandal led by former staffer Connor Stalions, per ESPN.
Moore's suspension will apply to Week 3 and Week 4 games against Central Michigan and Nebraska, which would give him the opportunity to coach against his alma mater Oklahoma in Week 2. Additionally, Moore will be barred from participating in any team activities during his suspension -- practices, meetings, etc. -- and will also incur recruiting-related penalties.
The suspension stems from allegations that Moore deleted 52 text messages with Stalions on the same day that Stalion's sign-stealing infractions were brought to public light in October of 2023. At the time, Moore was Michigan's offensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh.
In a Notice of Allegations of last August, the NCAA accused Michigan of 11 violations surrounding the sign-stealing scandal. While Moore's texts with Stalions were eventually recovered by device imaging and later presented to the NCAA by Moore, he is still cited for a Level 2 violation, with Level 1 being the most serious.
Michigan's self-imposed penalties do not protect Moore from further action by the NCAA, which can still hand down discipline of its own. A resolution is expected before the start of this season.
Moore was also suspended for the 2023 season-opener as part of another round of self-imposed penalties by the university for recruiting violations.
