Hunter Dickinson declares for NBA Draft – but decision isn't final

Hunter Dickinson was expected to play at least one more season for Michigan basketball. And maybe he still will.

But the Big Ten Freshman of the Year might be gone this summer.

Dickinson announced Wednesday via Twitter that he's "declaring for the NBA Draft and signing with an NCAA certified agent in order to retain my eligibility."

"It has always been my dream to play in the NBA, so it is important for me to gather information before making this decision," Dickinson said. "I look forward to getting feedback and I am excited for the next step of this process."

The 7'1 center averaged 14.1 points and 7.4 rebounds last season, helping Michigan win the Big Ten regular season title and make a run to the Elite Eight -- "memories that will last a lifetime," he said.

Dickinson has until July 19 to withdraw his name from the draft, which takes place July 29. In the meantime, he can solicit feedback from NBA teams and scouts as he mulls his decision.

He's not ranked on any draft boards because he wasn't considered a candidate to declare. NBADraft.net has Dickinson No. 47 among draft prospects in the class of 2024.

"I promise to work hard so I'm ready for whatever the future holds," Dickinson said.

The Wolverines have the country's No. 1 recruiting class arriving in the fall, but no one who could fill Dickinson's shoes at center.
