When the news broke on Friday night that the Dallas Cowboys were trading for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, some were caught off guard.

Lance, who the 49ers traded up to draft third overall in 2021, had fallen out of favor in San Francisco and Jerry Jones saw an opportunity to add a talented quarterback for a fourth-round pick in next year’s draft.

Former Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus of Audacy’s original podcast “Love of the Star” explained why he wasn’t surprised by Jones trading for Lance.

“It’s not surprising because if you look at the history of Jerry Jones – 14 years of my life was spent with the Cowboys doing things where it was trying to find quarterbacks, baseball players,” Broaddus said (5:15 in player above). “Jerry has a history of trying to find his quarterback without tanking the season or paying a huge price to go get one.”

Broaddus pointed out that Jones overpaid for Tony Romo in terms of his signing bonus, but that was the exception. Dak Prescott was a fourth-round pick, and the Cowboys had plenty of failed experiments over the years outside of those two.

“There were a lot of bad days of trying to find quarterbacks for the Dallas Cowboys,” Broaddus continued. “But it was never a high-premium pick and he wasn’t going to tank the season in order to go and get a quarterback…

“I’m not surprised knowing what I know about Jerry and trying to get quarterbacks and where they had Trey Lance on their board that they weren’t going to make a call. That doesn’t surprise me.”

He also mentioned that mid-round draft picks can easily be recouped.

“You can get your fourth-round pick back,” Broaddus said. “Don’t let that discourage you on what this deal really is all about.”

While Prescott is the Cowboys’ quarterback of the present, Lance gives them an option down the line if he can develop in Dallas.
