Recap - Day two of the Farmers Insurance Open

Another beautiful day from Torrey Pines at the Farmers Insurance Open, ends with a new golfer a top the leaderboards on the close of day two of competition.

Justin Rose is the new leader after day two, and what a day two he had! Rose birdied seven holes this afternoon on the South Course, something that was very difficult for golfers a day ago on the same course. He finished the day at 6 under, which propelled him to 15 under for the tournament and a three stroke lead on Hideki Matsuyama.

A day ago, Ryan Palmer was cracking jokes on hole 2 on the south course, letting fans know the “real golfers were only three groups away.” He was of course citing the back to back groupies that incorporated the likes of Rory Mcllroy, Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, Tiger Woods, Xander Schauffele, and Tony Finau, which might be the best back to back groupings on paper that any casual fan would love to see. Now, all jokes aside, Ryan Palmer is a “real” golfer. Palmer went 5 under on the North Course this afternoon and has found himself tied for third at 10 under par.

One of the those tied with Palmer is Jon Rahm who fell from the top spot in the tournament on day one to five strokes behind the leader. Honestly, he did not play that poorly on the South Course but after posting a 10 under on day one, posting an even score did not bode so well.

Best performance on the day goes to Rory Mcllroy, who swiftly climbed the leaderboards after posting an eagle on the first hole he played, followed by another eagle six holes later. Rory had this to say about having two eagles in nine holes, “Yeah it was nice. Only shooting 1 under yesterday on the South course, I knew I needed to go out there and shoot something at least in the mid 60s to just make the cut let alone get myself back in the golf tournament.”

The only other time Mcllroy had hit two eagles in nine holes was the 2014 Open, in which he won. Food for thought entering the weekend.

Feel good story of the day resides with Braden Thornberry, who is making his professional debut this week. Thornberry put up a 1 under on day one, and posted a 5 under in day two solidifying himself for weekend play. Thornberry’s thoughts after making the cut in his debut:

“Yeah it’s really exciting. Obviously it’s kind of interesting looking at the leaderboard because the scores are so different on the courses. Even though that’s not an easy golf course, I think I was in 74th out of the first round on the South, that was actually a pretty good spot to be, so I’m pretty happy with the way I’m playing.”

From a golfer making his first cut to a veteran golfer that has made many in his career; Tiger Woods will be playing this weekend after putting up another 2 under and finishing 4 under for the tournament in 48th. Aside from being happy about the result, Tiger had some fun playing with Finau and Schaffele, “We had a great time, all three of us, the first couple days. It was an absolute blast. We were needling each other pretty much every hole and we just had a blast doing it.”
