Manny Machado, off to a slow start and hitting just .161, came through with a walk-off RBI single Saturday, leading the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants in a 12-inning affair at Petco Park.
Machado’s fourth RBI of the season followed two-out hits by Tommy Pham and Juan Lagares off loser Reyes Montoya in the 12th. Padres reliever Kirby Yates was credited with the win after pitching two scoreless innings and striking out all six batters he faced. The victory was just San Diego’s second in the past eight games.
Trent Grisham provided the game’s first run with a solo home run, his first of the year, in the fourth off Jeff Samardzija. The Giants tied the game off Joey Lucchesi on a two-out RBI double by Hunter Pence in the sixth. Both starters went seven innings, Samardzija allowing six hits and one run and Lucchesi giving only two hits and striking out six.
Neither team was able to come up with a hit with a runner in scoring position until Machado’s hard ground ball found the hole between first and second base, scoring Pham from third with the winning run.
