For one of the few times during their current 11-game winning streak, the San Diego Padres found themselves down by a couple of runs to the Chicago Cubs in the middle of the ballgame Saturday night at Petco Park. It didn’t matter.
The big bats of Fernando Tatis Jr. and Eric Hosmer sounded the alarm, and the Padres came to life, rallying to beat the Cubs, 7-3, to continue their winning ways. Down 3-1 after Javier Baez hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth, San Diego immediately struck back on an RBI single by Tatis and a two-run double by Hosmer in the bottom of the inning.
The duo wasn’t done. In the sixth, Tatis’ two-out RBI triple and another RBI double by Hosmer plated two more runs for a 6-3 lead. Tatis, who finished a double short of the cycle, homered in the eighth to account for the final margin.
Meanwhile, Dinelson Lamet was in command on the mound, striking out 12 over seven innings while allowing only three hits. The Padres have allowed only 18 runs total during their 11-game streak. Drew Pomeranz finished by getting the final six outs in order to pick up his first save.
