Jimmy Garoppolo is playing the best football of his career

It was not long ago that Jimmy Garoppolo playing somewhere other than San Francisco seemed like a foregone conclusion.

Now, he’s putting together one of the best campaigns of his career – and he’s doing it in a 49ers uniform.

Garoppolo has handled himself just fine since taking back over the Niners’ starting quarterback gig with Trey Lance injured. A quality game manager, Garoppolo has done a fine job helping the offense cook, something they’ve done exceptionally well especially since the addition of Christian McCaffrey.

Garoppolo has had some solid stretches in his career. There was his initial run of games with the 49ers after he was traded in 2017 that earned him his five-year deal with San Francisco. There also was his 2019 campaign, which was his best overall season.

But Brian Renick detailed on the “49ers Webzone: No Huddle” podcast how this is the best stretch of Garoppolo’s career.

“Zero interceptions in three straight games for the first time in his career. Jimmy Garoppolo is playing the best football of his career, period," Renick said. "You can’t even argue 2019, and you want to know why? Because Jimmy Garoppolo right now, his touchdown-to-interception ratio is 3.75. … It’s almost three times as much as his career average. His career average is 1.75, which means for every 1.75 touchdowns he threw, he was throwing an interception.

“This season, it’s 3.75, so it’s almost four touchdowns for every one interception. That is elite, that is elite production coming from Jimmy Garoppolo. He’s now at 15 touchdowns and four interceptions. Here are your flowers, Jimmy Garoppolo, you have been absolutely nails.”

Garoppolo has proven he can win games. Though it hasn’t resulted in a trophy yet, Garoppolo got the Niners to a Super Bowl and took them within one game of another.

If he continues this form, combined with the 49ers' collection of offensive weapons and high-end defense, maybe this will be the year they get over the hump.
