Buster Posey has experienced a career resurgence in 2021, and it's been a major reason that the San Francisco Giants are an MLB-best 77-42 this season.
The 2012 National League MVP can become a free agent after this season, but Audacy Sports MLB Insider Jon Heyman says that the 34-year-old is almost certainly going to be back in San Francisco in 2022:
Because of COVID-19, Posey opted out of the 2020 season. He's returned in 2021 and put up one of the best seasons of a career that's likely headed for Cooperstown. Posey is slashing .330/.424/.548 with 15 home runs, 39 RBIs and a .972 OPS. The 4.1 fWAR that Posey has in 78 games in 2021 is already the highest mark that he's posted in a season since 2017.
At the outset of the year, the Giants picking up Posey's $22 million option for the 2022 season would have been unthinkable. But as Heyman noted above, that's now a more likely option than declining it and letting the franchise icon walk in free agency.
