What do Marlins catcher Alex Jackson and seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady have in common? Besides inhabiting the same planet, not much. But after his unreciprocated fist bump before Friday night’s game against the Cubs, Jackson can finally relate to the anguish Brady felt for years on the Patriots sideline, waiting for a high-five that would never come.
Before taking the field for Friday’s series opener in Miami, Jackson initiated a fist bump with a thoroughly uninterested authenticator, who either didn’t see the Marlins catcher offering his hand or was simply too busy to care. Seeing this exchange go nowhere, one of Jackson’s teammates ended the charade by pushing him toward the dugout entrance, reminding him that the game was about to start.
While Jackson, who was acquired from the Braves in exchange for power-hitting outfielder Adam Duvall last month, didn’t get the fist bump he had hoped for, it was still a pretty good night for the 25-year-old, who slugged a three-run homer as part of an 11-run second inning in Miami’s 14-10 victory over the visiting Cubs. Speaking of Chicago, it’s been slim pickings for the North-Siders of late with the Cubs dropping nine straight and 11 of 13 since moving half their team including stars Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Craig Kimbrel and Javier Baez at the trade deadline.
