Navy football enters the 2026 season with high expectations after putting together back-to-back double-digit-win seasons under head coach Brian Newberry.
Newberry has guided the Midshipmen to a combined 21 wins over the past two seasons, including an 11-2 record in 2025 and consecutive Commander-in-Chief's Trophy victories. Despite that success, Newberry said the program isn't resting on what it accomplished in previous seasons.
One of the biggest challenges this season will be replacing several key contributors, particularly in the backfield and at the skill positions. Blake Horvath, Eli Heidenreich and Landon Robinson are among the players no longer available, leaving Navy with plenty of production to replace.
The Midshipmen will rely heavily on an experienced offensive line, which Newberry believes has improved significantly heading into the new season. That veteran group could provide an important foundation for Navy's younger skill players.
The program's connection to San Diego remains another important piece. Navy football games can be heard on 97.3 The Fan, providing the Midshipmen with additional exposure in one of the country's largest Navy communities.
Newberry said Navy has made a renewed effort to recruit California, believing the state offers both strong high school football talent and an important connection to the Navy.
Navy opens the season against Towson, an FCS opponent Newberry expects to provide an immediate test. The Tigers enter the matchup with a talented, athletic roster and a coaching staff Newberry described as experienced and well-prepared.
After two highly successful seasons, Navy enters 2026 with plenty of momentum. But with a new group of players stepping into major roles, Newberry knows this year's team will have to establish its own identity.
