San Diego FC goalkeeper CJ Dos Santos joined the Braden Surprenant Show to discuss San Diego FC’s season, overcoming adversity, and the exciting opportunity to represent Cape Verde on the international stage.
Dos Santos reflected on the challenges San Diego FC has faced this season, saying the club has stayed united through adversity and continues to “pull the rope in the right direction” despite difficult stretches. The goalkeeper also shared what it was like being part of San Diego FC’s inaugural season, describing the energy around the club from day one and how the organization has continued to grow stronger together.
The Philadelphia-born keeper also opened up about his soccer journey, from playing in the Philadelphia Union Academy system to representing the United States at the youth international level before eventually earning the opportunity to play for Cape Verde.
Dos Santos called it an “absolute honor” to represent his father’s home country in the upcoming World Cup, explaining how meaningful it has been reconnecting with his family’s heritage through the experience. He also gave listeners insight into Cape Verde’s culture, describing the island nation’s passion for soccer, music, and community.
The San Diego FC goalkeeper also previewed Saturday’s showdown against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, admitting the club has extra motivation after Vancouver eliminated San Diego FC in last season’s finale.
