SDFC resumed play in the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday with a home match against defending Liga MX champion Toluca in the Round of 16, and came away victorious after overcoming several obstacles. Toluca's Jesus Gallardo scored on a penalty kick in the 16th minute after Marcus Ingvartsen drew a red card after being whistled in the penalty area for a dangerous kick, giving Toluca an early 1-0 lead.
Playing a man down from that point on, the home squad would score three unanswered goals while playing a man down. David Vazquez hit an equalizer in the 32nd minute, and then scored again moments after halftime to put SDFC up 2-1. Anders Dreyer would later score on a laser from outside of the box to put SDFC up 3-1.
Just before stoppage time in the second half, Manu Duah drew a red card for using his arm to block a shot on goal, handing Helio Nunes a penalty shot that he would convert on, bringing the score to 3-2 and putting SDFC down two men. But they would hold on for the 3-2 win in the first leg of the Round of 16 in the Concacaf Champions Cup. SDFC will resume its MLS regular season schedule with a road match against FC Dallas on Saturday, before traveling to Mexico to face Toluca in Leg Two of the Round of 16 on Wednesday March, 18th.
