The Jets could already be on the hunt for another quarterback after drafting Zach Wilson second overall last year. It appears that Wilson may not have much of a future in New York and Mike White doesn’t seem to have the staying power as a starting quarterback.
It’s frustrating for fans as the Jets have most of the other pieces there. They have talented skill-position players as well as one of the best defenses in the league. Unfortunately, quarterback is a pretty important position and that’s where the Jets are lacking.
Could they be in the mix for a future Hall of Famer this offseason?
Aaron Rodgers may want out in Green Bay after nearly two decades with Jordan Love ready to take over. The two-time reigning NFL MVP could be a target for the Jets.
Eliot Shorr-Parks of the Audacy Original Podcast “The Best Football Show” talked about where Rodgers could land this offseason if he’s moved and made a pretty solid argument for the Jets.
“The other team that I think would be at the top of the list for Aaron Rodgers is the New York Jets,” Shorr-Parks said (7:43 in player above). “They’re a team that right now after the Zach Wilson fiasco … they don’t have a quarterback. Mike White, realistically, is not the answer. They have to be smart about the fact that even if does take them on a run to the playoffs and even win a playoff game that they really shouldn’t come back with him as the guy next year. He just simply is not the long-term answer.”
White had an impressive showing against the Bears but was brought back down to Earth in Minnesota. He went 31-for-57 for 369 yards with two interceptions while rushing for a touchdown.
The Jets are pretty set in the near future at the skill positions with Garrett Wilson and Corey Davis at wide receiver along with Breece Hall at running back for next season. They also have one of the best defenses in the NFL with a defensive head coach.
More importantly, Rodgers could go from one LaFleur brother to another as Mike LaFleur is the Jets' offensive coordinator. Rodgers has worked with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur since 2019.
“Aaron Rodgers could come in, have more control over the offense,” Shorr-Parks said. “Robert Saleh can handle the defense, and Aaron Rodgers and LaFleur can handle the offense. I think it would be a good situation for him with those receivers there.”
The Jets are in a bit of a tough division, but it’s winnable. The Dolphins are unproven, Patriots are on the downswing, but the Bills stand in the Jets’ way. Still, a playoff berth would be very likely with a better quarterback.
“If you have Aaron Rodgers, those skill-position players, and that defense, they could turn things around quickly,” Shorr-Parks said. The Jets have the draft capital to make a move for Aaron Rodgers. They have the cap space to make a move for Aaron Rodgers.”
Now, it may be up to the Jets if they want to go with someone like Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr, or even Russell Wilson instead of Rodgers.
“I do think the Jets are a team where Aaron can convince himself he can win right away,” Shorr-Parks continued. “He’d go to a major media market, and I think it could be a winning situation for both sides.”
