The WNBA took over Las Vegas this weekend for its All-Star festivities. From the skills challenge on Friday night to the game taking center stage on Saturday, All-Star weekend was a blast for all involved.
Prior to the game on Saturday, ESPN’s SportsCenter account tweeted out an interesting graphic asking who would win between this year’s All-Stars and the ones 20 years ago in 2003, including Sheryl Swoopes.
Swoopes is one of the original WNBA stars and her accolades are seemingly endless. The Basketball Hall of Famer was a four-time champion, six-time All-Star, and she was named one of the top 15 WNBA players of all time at the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game.
Swoopes now hosts the Audacy Original Podcast “Queens of the Court” and responded to that tweet with co-host Jordan Robinson on Sunday.
“This is such a no-brainer,” Swoopes said (42:45 in player above). “First of all you have Spoon – you know how I feel about Chelsea Gray. Chelsea Gray is a baller. But Chelsea Gray ain’t see nobody like T-Spoon, who is going to get up in your grill, is going to talk to you, and is going to lock you up! So all those fancy passes, all that, that ain’t happening.
“And then you got – I’m not even going to say the names – you got C.C., S.S., T.T., and L.L.,” Swoopes continued.
The 2003 team is star-studded with some of the best to ever play in the WNBA.
The 2023 team may be garnering more attention and excitement, but Swoopes is standing by her teammates.
“Let me say this so no one comes for me, I’m not a hater, but there’s not a lot of defense on this 2023 team,” Swoopes said.
“That was my first thought,” Robinson said. “I said ‘This is the 2003 All-Defense team. 2023 isn’t going to score a point! It’s too much defense on the ‘03 team.”
“The 2023 team isn’t going to score much and we’re going to go crazy scoring,” Swoopes said.
“Listen, I so appreciate the tweet. I love the conversation. I love people saying what they got to say. Because here’s my thing, some of the comments I read, I get it, it’s recency bias. But if you know the OGs on this list, come on now. Rethink your answer…
“I have not wanted to play since I retired, but after seeing this I was like ‘Damn!’”
