A follow-up to this past summer’s “Single Soon,” “Love On” tells a completely different story, of embracing new love, or as the French say, nouvel amour.
The first song Gomez has released since she went public with her boyfriend Benny Blanco’s relationship, lyrically “Love On” captures the feeling of new love blossoming, getting butterflies, knowing your worth, and even gets un peu (a little) risqué throughout its flirty verses.
The track starts off with a French intro that translates into “What am I going to name you? I'm going to name you ‘Love’, ‘Tender love’” before jumping right into the chorus, "Wait ’til I turn my love on / I’m no cheap thrill / I’m a rollercoaster ride, baby jump on / Come on, come on," Selena sings.
“This doesn’t have to be some sort of mathematical equation / Slip off your jeans, slide in the sheets, screaming 'yes' in quotations / Clock in, baby get to work / Night shift but with all the perks,” Gomez goes on in Verse 1.
For an added French twist and a little bit of spice, not to mention our personal favorite part of the song, Selena finds a way to mention steak tartare, and rhymes it with car, and then continues on rhyming the words bar, memoir and bazaar. Singing, “Why we conversing over this steak tartare when we could be / Somewhere other than here making out in the back of a car / Or in the back of a bar / Or we could make a memoir, yeah / On the back wall of the last stall in the bathroom at the bazaar.”
Fittingly shot in the City of Lights, the video features Gomez frolicking around a chateau, and dancing on an antique coffee table, lots of making out, a French bulldog, ballerinas, exquisite FASHUN, lots of French pastries, and what we can only assume is a shot that involved fastening a GoPro to a croissant.
