The Florida-born and raised rapper and singer first arrived on Soundcloud in 2015 with her debut track "Girls.“ Her self-released debut EP, Oh the Places You'll Go, dropped in 2020 featuring the single "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” which went viral the following year on TikTok, quickly gaining her label interest. Her second EP, Bra-Less, arrived that year as well.
After opening for SZA on her 2021 tour, Doechii was introduced to an even bigger audience and in March 2022 signed with Capitol Records, as Top Dawg Entertainment’s first female rapper. Winning the Billboard Women in Music Rising Star award in 2022 and 2023 respectively, Doechii kicked off Launch with her single “What It Is" which has been featured across Audacy Pop stations for the past several weeks.
“I am honored and can’t thank Audacy enough for this opportunity,” Doechii expressed. “I have been so excited seeing the response to my record 'What It Is,' and I can’t wait for it to reach a larger audience.”
During various chats with both Audacy’s Bru and Julia, Doechii shared a few revelations and fun facts, including who her musical idols were as she was coming up. Naming, “Lauryn Hill, Kanye West… Erykah Badu, André 3000,” as the artists she looks up to.
Doechii also discussed enjoying her successes, not giving up, following her heart and her high hopes for big features on her album, and more.
An instant triumph on TikTok, Doechii discussed how she wasn’t entirely shocked by her social media success. “I’m an internet baby… and before I even did music I was on YouTube, so I had like a lot of viral videos and stuff on YouTube and Vine and things like that," she explained. "So my relationship with social media goes so way back, so I’m kinda used to this… flow of how things work and how people react to music and things like that.”
“So yeah,” she continued, “I’m not super shocked, and especially - I got really good with TikTok recently. I used to not be on TikTok," Doechii admitted, adding having a idc attitude about it, “but now I get it,” she said about the app. “This is fun.”
When talking more about her breakout track “What It Is”, Doechii revealed she had a “gut feeling” that it would be successful. Later going on to say, “When I heard the beat I just knew immediately, it was gonna be crazy.”
And while noting her forthcoming album is “almost done,” for which she is working on the “final touches.” she shared that the scariest part about making it “so far,” would have to be the “features.” Further explaining as to why and also for the hold up, is “because I want really big features, and I hope the features that I want will happen.”
