From Beyoncé launching House of Deréon with her mom, Tina, Evelyn Braxton raising a famous family to rival The Jacksons, and Misa Hylton-Brim being a literal architect in terms of hip-hop fashion, allow us to honor some of music's OG moms (often momagers) behind a few of your favorite artists.
Tina Knowles-Lawson
If you ever wondered what it's like to birth the greatest living artist in the world, look no further than Mama Tina. Aside from giving birth to Beyoncé and Solange, she gave us the iconic looks of Destiny's Child during her days as designer. Now, she spends her time giving us the best corny jokes, being a philanthropist and giving us all the relationship-goal-realness with her loving husband, actor Richard Lawson.
Deb Antney
The industry mom to many, Deb Antney has brought in and managed several artists in her time— from her son, Waka Flocka, to Nicki Minaj, OJ the Juiceman, and Gucci Mane. She is the epitome of a businesswoman. Deb is the go-to for music industry advice and business help. Her mothering is that tough love you need with a mix of mommy protection. When working with Deb, you'll quickly learn that she does not play about her business or her clients. She is a true boss mom who hasn't switched up her ways, even if the music game has.
Evelyn Braxton
Matriarch to one of the most famous families in music and on reality television, Evelyn Braxton is mom to Toni, Tamar, Towanda, Trina, Traci and Michael Braxton. Ms. Evelyn is the glue that holds this family together in everything that occurs in their life from health, marriage, business, and children. She has shown us how old-school mothering created strong and ambitious women. As an opera singer herself, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree when it comes to this family. If it wasn't for Evelyn, we wouldn't be blessed with the voices and personalities of the Braxton sisters.
Teresa Caldwell
Bow Wow is the only rapper who traded in kindergarten to build a hip-hop empire and it wouldn't have been possible without the help of his mother, Teresa. The author, boutique owner, interior designer, and certified GlamMa to Bow's 10-year-old daughter, Shai and young son, is overseeing the rapper's thriving film/TV career. This comes as no surprise since Bow, in recent years, stepped out of the booth and onto set. The bond Teresa has to her family is unmatched and she is always about her business.
Sonja Norwood
As mother to "The Vocal Bible," and singer-turned-serial-tech entrepreneur Ray J, Sonja is the epitome of a Momager. She is a legend and blueprint in this business with over 25 years of experience. Sonja has managed the careers of Brandy and Ray J since the very beginning as children. Not only is she the mother to these two talented siblings, but now she's a proud grandma of three.
Tina Douglas
The self-dubbed "original momager" is known for laying low, but letting her actions speak louder. Tina Douglas is the mother and manager of GRAMMY award-winning singer/songwriter, Ashanti. Helping the singer at the start of her career in 2002 to now, she is the reason Ashanti is out here living her best life. When we saw Ashanti make a slight comeback in appearances and performances all over the world, we couldn't help but to acknowledge that being Mama Tina's doing. Taking pride in being a momager, Tina's Instagram shows us the many projects her daughters/clients do while showcasing her youthfulness after being in the game for over 20 years.
Misa Hylton-Brim
If you know hip-hop style, you know Misa Hylton-Brim. Known as "The Architect," Misa is the woman behind some of R&B and hip-hop's most notable styles including the aesthetics of Mary J. Blige and Lil' Kim. Her signature "hip hop glam" is one that stylists of today are still studying. She is a mom to Justin Combs, son of Diddy, along with Madison Star and Niko, from her marriage with music exec, JoJo Brim.
