The owner of Ziggy the dog feared the worst after she was abruptly forced to evacuate from her Placer County home due to the River Fire and leave almost everything behind, including her beloved pet, according to a report from KOVR.
Fortunately, later that night, Ziggy was found wandering a nearby road and rescued by the Placer County Animal Shelter.
"My mom got him a few years ago after his previous owners lost everything in the Paradise fire," the owner’s daughter, Kristen Day, told the station. "And now he’s been rescued from the River Fire."
In many evacuation circumstances, owners either stay put or are forced to leave their animals behind because shelters won’t accept pets. However, Placer County Animal Shelter dispersed resources to account for lost or missing pets during this frantic period for the region, including canvassing evacuation areas, looking for animals and bringing them to safety.
Residents are also asked to call 211 if they need a place to leave their pets.
"We have lots of dog kennels and open cat kennels, and we have assistance provided by our partner shelters," Katie Ingram with the Placer County Animal Shelter told the station.
The River Fire burned 2,619 acres of Placer and Nevada Counties and was 90% contained as of Wednesday night.
