We are living in an era where more and more adult children are still living at home with their parents.

Be it a matter of circumstance or personal choice, more than 50% of adult children still live with at least one parent, and that number only continues to increase. And this begs the question: Should these parents ask for rent from their adult children in order to continue living under their roof?

Many parents charge their kids just a "percentage of every bill" in order to teach them about the cost of living. One parent wrote on Facebook, "I charge mine about $100 per week, dependent on their situation, which covers utilities and basic foods. They pay for their phone and personal items, and generally pick up the little things for the house like milk and toilet paper if we run out."

Another parent collects $50 from each paycheck, but puts their money into an account for them later that could potentially go towards a down payment on a new home or even a car.

So for parents with adult children living at home, should you charge them rent?
