It’s been 30 years since Disney has celebrated “A Whole New World” from Aladdin becoming their first and only #1 song from an animated film. That’s all changed now as “We Don't Talk About Bruno” from Disney's Encanto struck the top of the charts with its viral success.

“I think the music translates [to] anybody, like anywhere in the world and I think that’s the beauty of it,” said singer Adassa, the voice of Dolores, to Audacy’s Mornings with Christine and Salt regarding the Lin-Manuel Miranda penned tune.

“When I saw TikTok and how crazy it’s been, how people are doing so many things… singing the song, dancing to it, it really has taken off because the fans have asked for it and are doing so many beautiful things to it.”

The song’s success is proof of the many people who relate to the storyline as sons and daughters of immigrant parents, including Adassa.

“Back in the days when my grandma was watching TV, and my parents, I never saw somebody that was Afro-Latino having a principle role in any film… They took such care in making the Afro-Latinos and people with dark skin look so beautiful and really show the essence that we all have in such a distinctive way.”

“What they’ve done in this film… it makes you feel like now it is the time for all of us to have success, for all of us to enjoy that and being from an immigrant family, my parents are seeing that.”

In addition to hitting #1 with, “We Don't Talk About Bruno,” the film also earned two Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score.
