In a joint video announcement with the National Basketball Association, the K-pop musician and producer distinctly states, “I am proud to announce that I’ve become an NBA ambassador.”
“It is personally a great honor as I have loved basketball since I was young. Stay tuned for more to come with the NBA,” he says in between clips of him attending games and meeting players.
As many K-pop fans may know, BTS' SUGA has been a longtime fan of the NBA, having been previously sighted courtside at Golden State Warriors pre-season games. As an ambassador, SUGA and the NBA will undoubtedly work together in a bid for mutual promotion. Specifically, the NBA official release states that he will, “participate in several league initiatives that will be featured on the NBA’s and his personal social media channels, including attending NBA games and events in the U.S. and Asia”.
But this isn’t the only thing that SUGA is debuting this month. His first solo album, D-Day, and a Disney+ documentary of the album's creation will simultaneously be released on April 21. Both promise a new intimate view into the musician's life and struggles, while at the same time, this multitude of announcements bring SUGA to mainstream American culture.
The announcement also reports that, “the NBA will have a presence throughout SUGA’s first solo world tour, collaborating around select concerts in celebration of the release of SUGA’s debut solo album, D-DAY.” Perhaps some NBA x SUGA merchandise, or more? It seems like we will have to wait and see what SUGA announces next!
