“We’re always trying to find new ways to get inspired,” Ross Lynch tells us over Zoom from his home in Los Angeles. His older brother Rocky is sitting next to him, nodding in agreement. Together Ross and Rocky Lynch form The Driver Era, the project they started in 2018.

“I think one of our favorite ways is probably just both of us being in this room with our individual instruments, whatever they may be, just like seeing what kind of vibes we can create,” Ross continues. And their latest single, “Heaven Angel” is pure vibes. The sexy, synthy, late-night at the club but you still need to dance track is one that deserves to be played a few times in a row, and then a few more. It’s the perfect song for a summer where the world is trying to emerge back to a sense of normalcy. It’s intoxicating, it’s powerful, and it’s fun.
Their upcoming sophomore album (title and release date currently unknown) is the first album that they wrote and produced completely on their own, and they have spent quite a long time perfecting their craft. While The Driver Era only has one full length album under their belt, their forthcoming album will actually be their fourth full length album. They have been playing music together for over a decade, first as R5 with two of their other siblings, and now The Driver Era. And that doesn’t include the music Ross has made for his acting projects like Austin and Ally and The “Teen Beach” movies, or the EPs and singles Ross and Rocky have released under their various projects.
Basically: The Brothers Lynch are prolific. And they show no signs of stopping.
Their process is very collaborative, with both of them sharing songwriting, instrumental, and producing credits. Their hands are in every bit of their music, with very little outside influence, and that shines through in the authenticity of their sound. When you hear a song from The Driver Era, it is impossible to mistake it for someone else.
“I'm someone that won't really write Songs,” Rocky said, speaking to his creative process. “I like to do a bunch of sounds which is why I kind of do production more. And then I'll have weird inspiration that will strike every couple of months from like ‘oh, here's a song. Here’s a whole song.’”
Those sounds and that production is what leads to a multitude of remixes from The Driver Era, like the “Preacher Man - Rocky Remix”, “Preacher Man” being the band’s first single. All of their remixes offer an almost alternate universe of The Driver Era’s music, showing a glimpse of what the songs could have been if Ross and Rocky had taken it in another direction, adding to their music’s shelf life.
We asked who they’d like to have remix their music, given the chance, and they agreed Robert DeLong and Diplo would be the dream. But they’re also having a blast making their own remixes.
“It's all about the fun. It's all about the joy. That's definitely what we strive for. And we're always trying to remind each other of it too,” Rocky said, and that fun is palpable, especially in “Heaven Angel.”
