Now the artists behind the song that feels like a complete festival anthem, sit down with RADIO.COM’s Julia to discuss the continual success of the tune, and what’s next for the two artists.
Sigala, the DJ, and producer behind the track shares that they are still buzzing from the success of the record. While the song has already peaked in the U.K. Sigala explains that it is amazing to watch it gain traction in places like the U.S. and Australia. James adds, “it’s weird like Sigala said, I’m on to something new… and then all of a sudden you get to keep enjoying it again and keep reliving it again.”
Sigala touches on his choice to include the MGMT sample of “Time to Pretend” sharing that although the song has a sad meaning it represents a positive time in his life and the lives of many listeners who came of age listening to MGMT. “It has kind of a positive twist, and the sample when I brought that into the equation it just makes it really happy and that’s what I kind of try and do with all of my songs,” sites the producer.
Through the process of making “Lasting Lover,” Sigala said he aimed to challenge himself by taking the track, which started as a ballad, and turning it into a dance record. He joyfully explains, “I gave it a shot and it just worked out really well, and then the MGMT thing, that was just sort of a happy accident.”
When it came down to vocals, Arthur was at the top of the list for Sigala. “There’s really not a lot of people who could have done this song justice, but James absolutely killed it.” James includes, “well Sigala was definitely on my list. I’ve done one other dance record in my career… basically you know that you’re going to get real quality from Sigala… he sounds better than anyone on the radio because he puts in the work and the detail.”
James, who is used to putting out “these sad bangers” had no worries when pairing up with Sigala, who is on the “opposite side of the spectrum” from the type of music James records. Sigala and Arthur came together to “mesh” the two worlds of ballads and joyful dance tracks to create the serendipitous sound of “Lasting Lover.”
Well now the rest is history and the artists are both currently working on their own albums. Sigala tells us that there are more amazing collaborations on the way. James says he spent most of 2020 recording his next album and that he will be giving us his next single, “soon!”
