Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter recently told Entertainment Tonight the ‘90s boy band turned down the opportunity to play during the 2001 Super Bowl halftime show, opting to perform the national anthem instead.

"It's interesting because we were presented the opportunity to perform at the halftime at the Super Bowl and it was in Tampa, my hometown," Carter revealed. "At the time we came from the era of, we loved the Whitney Houston rendition of the national anthem. And for us, we got the choice and we passed on the halftime."

After passing on the prestigous opportunity, the spot was given to the rivalry boyband of the time, *NSYNC. Aerosmith and Britney Spears were also granted performance slots with appearances by Mary J. Blige and Nelly

Carter didn’t seem to have any regrets about the group’s decision stating, “it was a memorable experience for everyone.” However, given another opportunity, he might have a different answer. Carter expressed he’d “want to do it in the future,” and would be open to a collaboration with *NSYNC.

Wait, what?! Someone make sure the Super Bowl officials are hearing this!

Carter believes a good blast from the ‘90s would serve fans well after a year focused on merely surviving.

“Going back to the era we came from, the late '90s. It was a really beautiful time and I think everybody wants that again,” he said. “They want that feeling coming out of this, everything that we have gone through together and society for the past year and a half. We want to be a part of that story, of love and growth and just coming out of the dark.”

Well, the seed is planted. And while we hope this actually becomes a thing… for now, we’ll focus on celebrating the recently announced collab between the groups in honor of Pride Month.

Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter and AJ McLean along with with NSYNC's Lance Bass and Joey Fatone revealed plans to host a Bingo Under the Stars game night at The Grove in Los Angeles on June 18. Complete with prizes, guest appearances and of course, a throwback performance by the boyband members in attendance, it’s bound to be a one-of-a-kind experience.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the LQBTQ+ community via The Trevor Project and LA Pride’s Pride Makes a Difference campaign.
