There’s a new LGBTQ+ superhero heading to television screens.
HBO Max has cast the role of Alan Scott for its upcoming live-action “Green Lantern” series. Based on original characters from the DC Comics, Scott is Earth’s original Green Lantern who later came out as gay.
“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” actor Jeremy Irvine will play the role of Alan Scott/Green Lantern, reported Variety.
“Very excited to be joining the DC Universe!,” Irvine captioned a side-by-side photo of himself and the animated character. “Can’t wait to get started.”
Irvine also included the oath of the Lantern Corps, “In brightest day, in blackest night/ No evil shall escape my sight/ Let those who worship evil's might/ Beware my power — Green Lantern's light!"
According to the outlet, the new series will span decades and galaxies, featuring different versions of Green Lantern. The series will kick off with Scott’s iteration of the superhero, a closeted FBI agent in 1941.
In 2012, the character came out as gay in the DC Comics.
According to EW, this will be the first time Scott’s version of Green Lantern appears in a live-action series and addresses his sexuality.
It was previously reported that “American Horror Story” star Finn Wintrock would play Guy Gardner, an alpha male Green Lantern set in 1984.
In addition to “Mama Mia,” moviegoers may remember Irvine for his role in the controversial 2015 film “Stonewall.”
Centered around the 1969 Stonewall riots, the movie was accused of whitewashing history after making Irvine’s fictional character (Danny) the focus, rather than the many Black and Brown queer indivduals that were actually responsible for launching the gay rights movement, like Marsha P. Johnson.
Irvine addressed the situation back in 2017 and noted how he hoped the controversy served to educate viewers.
"I don't think any of us expected it to get the attention that it has," he told The Daily Beast. "But now how many people have heard the name Marsha P. Johnson, opposed to never having heard it before?”
A premiere date for “Green Lantern,” which is being written and produced by openly gay Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti, has not been announced.
