Bones Hillman, long time bass player for Midnight Oil, has died at the age of 62 on November 7 after his battle with cancer.

Born Wayne Stevens, Bones joined the group in 1987 appearing on their Blue Sky Mining, and Earth and Sun and Moon albums. Midnight Oil announced their end in 2002 but had reformed for special one-off's during the break and in 2018, the band announced their return.

Bones reportedly passed away at his home in Milwaukee.

“We’re grieving the loss of our brother Bones Hillman,” Midnight Oil said in a statement. “He was the bassist with the beautiful voice, the band member with the wicked sense of humour, and our brilliant musical comrade. … He played and sang on every Midnight Oil recording since Blue Sky Mining and we did thousands of gigs together.”

The statement added: “We will deeply miss our dear friend and companion and we send our sincerest sympathies to Denise, who has been a tower of strength for him.”

Midnight Oil’s latest album, The Makarrata Project, was released last month.
