And Why Has It Taken Over My Facebook Feed?

You may have noticed lots of green, yellow and gray (or black) boxes in your Facebook feed recently, with odd combinations of numbers.

Welcome to Wordle, the latest viral, word-guessing, game-playing, score-sharing social media trend.

Wordle players are given six tries to guess a daily five-letter word.

Players are given hints if they guess a correct letter. Green means the letter appears in the final word and in the position guessed. Yellow means the letter appears in the final word but in a different position. Gray (or black) means the letter does not appear in the final word.

Remember the old strategy board game Mastermind where players have to guess a color code and are given similar hints when they guess a correct color? Wordle is like the word version of that.

New York based software designer Josh Wardle and his partner Palak Shah are fans of crosswords and other word puzzles. So Wardle created Wordle as a gift to her and to the rest of the world.

The game is free to play, it's not mining your data and Wardle is donating any potential proceeds from the game to charity.

Players share their daily scores with the rest of the world on social media showing the pattern of guesses, the number of the daily puzzle and how many tries out of six it took to correctly guess the word.

In the pictured example above, this is Wordle 212 4/6 meaning it is puzzle number 212 and it took the player four tries out of six to correctly guess it.

Now that you know what those strange colored boxes and numbers are doing in your Facebook feed, give the game a try yourself at Wordle and share your score!
