The Yellowstone prequel follows the Dutton family on their journey west as they seek a better life in the "promised land," across America's Great Plains toward Montana. To tell the story, Sheridan secured an A-list cast including Sam Elliott, Billy Bob Thornton, Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Additionally, Sheridan also secured some big names for cameos, one of those names being Tom Hanks.
While his appearance was confined to one scene with very few lines, Hanks’ impact was stellar as he portrayed a General in a Civil War flashback alongside Tim McGraw.
“You never want to botch a scene when you got Tom Hanks in there with you,” Tim told Cinemablend. “He’s a great guy. We've been friends for a long time… I knew that there was this part in there, and I gave him a call said, 'Hey, would you be interested in showing up doing a cameo in this show that we're doing?' And he goes, 'Tell me when to be there,' and he just showed up.”
Both true professionals, Tom and Tim took the weight of the civil war scene seriously, agreeing not to see each other until the shoot so they could fully immerse themselves in the intensity of the moment, losing themselves in the emotionally-charged scene.
“We didn't see each other that whole morning, because I didn't want to see what he looked like,” Tim said. “He didn't want to see what I looked like, because we know each other so well. So when he walked on set, it was pretty magical. And when he puts his hand on my shoulder in that scene, you could feel the weight of the world between both of them with what had gone on. It was a pretty heavy scene.”
