Singer Billie Eilish has always had a somewhat complicated relationship with social media. On one hand, it obviously has helped her career, allowing the spread of her music to a massive audience -- as she's currently boasting well over 100 million followers across her channels.
On the other hand, while social media has been a source of distress for Billie, who has said before she feels as though she "just can't win" and reading comments makes her want to post less -- she's nonetheless chosen time and again to use her platform to spread positivity in the face of adversity and nasty comments.

NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY - a short film
Billie went full force against body-shaming not only on her social channels, but also during her Where Do We Go? World Tour in 2020 as a video interlude. In the clip, the singer asks while disrobing and submerging herself in a black liquid, "Would you like me to be smaller, weaker, softer, taller? Would you like me to be quiet? Do my shoulders provoke you? Does my chest? Am I my stomach? My hips? The body I was born with, Is it not what you wanted?" The audio from "Not My Responsibility" was included on Eilish's sophomore album Happier Than Ever, released in July 2021.
Explaining A Movement
"The slogan #BlackLivesMatter does not mean other lives don't. It's calling attention to the fact that society clearly thinks black lives don't f***ing matter!!!!! And they f***ing do!!!!!" Eilish explained in a lengthy post amid nationwide social justice protests following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police in 2020. "I've been trying to take this week to figure out a way to address this delicately," the singer said. "I have an enourmous [sic] platform and I try really hard to be respectful and take time to think through what I say and how I say it…But holy f***ing s*** I'm gonna just start talking." Adding, "If I hear one more person say 'aLL liVeS maTtEr' one more f***ing time I'm gonna lose my f***ing mind. Will you shut the f*** uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup???? No one is saying your life doesn't matter. No one is saying your life is not hard."
"Do whatever you want whenever you want"
After shedding the baggy style she became known for, and navigating comments about her new look -- Billie, already self-conscious about body image, took to her social channels with a message of defiance at those who questioned her, and anyone else who had gone through a similar transformation. Sharing a photo of herself corseted for Vogue magazine, Billie said, "i love these pictures and i loved doing this shoot. do whatever you want whenever you want. f*** everything else."
"Flop Era"... sure.
Clapping back at less than stellar responses to her Happier Than Ever single "NDA," Billie let her lace bra and corset do the talking on Instagram. However, before that, she took to TikTok with a video directed at the haters calling this her "flop era." Be like Billie... laugh 'em off.
Owning Her Mistakes
Instagram @BillieEilish
After a video of young Billie using an anti-Asian slur resurfaced, she officially issued an apology for her previous behavior, admitting she is "appalled and embarrassed," and that it makes her "want to barf."
Nice Headline, Bro
Following a ridiculous, and ridiculously long headline that popped up from The Daily Mail stating, 'Proof that money can make you change your values and sell out': Fans shocked as Billie Eilish swaps baggy clothes for lingerie in Vogue - despite years of vowing to 'hide her body' -- Eilish reposted the above graphic created by Emily Clarkson, author and daughter of British TV personality Jeremy Clarkson, to her IG story calling out the sexism and pure creepiness of the headline.
Visible Growth
Although this is a series of interviews that were done for Vanity Fair when she was just 15, 16, and 17-years-old respectively -- we can see a visible change in not just her look but personality and the growth she had gone through in such a short period of time. This video where Billie answers the same questions three years in a row provides a wonderful time capsule to look back on and to take away some lessons of our own.
