Stand-up comedian and actress, Sherry Cola, visited her old Los Angeles radio stomping grounds as she joined KROQ’s KLEIN. ALLY. SHOW. to chat about her role in the new film, JOY RIDE.

Cola, a former promotions assistant for the station’s parent company found her way to the big screen securing gigs as a stand-up comedian, her own segment on Carson Daly’s radio show, as well as playing the role of Alice on Freeform’s Good Trouble. Now, the former radio employee is taking her career to new heights as she stars in the new R-rated comedy, JOY RIDE.
“Talk about representation, this is the first of its kind,” Cola said of the movie that tells the unapologetically raunchy story of four friends who embark on an adventurous international trip. “We had to go there. You’ve never seen an R-rated, raunchy-ness, unapologetic, in-your-face-ness with these Asian beautiful cuties,” she promised viewers.
While excited to share details of the movie with listeners, Cola also took some time to reminisce on her time in radio and share how it helped her get to where she is today.
“In 2014, I got a job at AMP Radio 97.1 FM and it was just street team as you know it," she said of the entry-level position. “Passing out stickers at a Metro PCS, but it was such a rollercoaster because suddenly you’re escorting Ed Sheeran at The Forum. It was so fun and always spontaneous.”
By her third year with the station, Sherry had worked her way up to running audio boards, being on-air and even securing gigs as a stand-up comedian after being encouraged by former fellow employees at the station.
“I had the goal of being on-air when I stepped into that building, and it happened,” she said before detailing that was just the beginning of what was to come.
“I essentially was doing stand-up my whole life,” she shared, saying she would regularly perform for events like talent shows, open mic nights and more. “Chuck, my dear boss back then was like, ‘Just do it, just do it.’ So I did it, and it was euphoria and I’ve been doing it ever since.”
