A Guide to Choosing Safe, Sustainable Products for Your Dog

Man's best friend should be green, too.

Many dog owners often go the extra mile for their pets. But the perks of being a pup don't have to end with the occasional extra treat.

Environmentally conscientious pet owners should hold their pet product and food decisions to the same high eco standards as other choices in their daily lives.

For the good of the planet — and your canine's happiness and health — here are some things to keep in mind when picking out your dog's food and products.

Avoid plastic, which can be harmful to dogs and the environment

An common ingredient used in the production of plastic is bisphenol A, which studies have found can affect the reproductive systems of animals. Avoid products made used from plastic, which your dog and nature alike will have trouble breaking down.

Get durable toys made out of natural materials

Instead of plastic, opt for toys made out of natural materials such as a cotton, rope, natural rubber, canvas or bamboo. Getting products that are natural and on the larger side will ensure that your dog isn't only gnawing on safe materials, but that they'll last longer and thus need to be replaced less often.

Upcycle things around the house to make new toys

Don't underestimate how much fun your dog can have with objects around the house. Recycling old t-shirts or towels is a great way to keep your scruffy pup entertained and tire them out with a fun afternoon of tug-of-war.

Select sustainable grooming products

There are more options than ever for pet owners who want to go green with their dogs' grooming products. Shampoo bars are a great way to reduce plastic and get something that will be sensitive and refreshing on your dog. Look for natural choices that are cruelty-free and don't use extra chemicals. If your dog likes a good scrub in the bath, go for wooden brushes with natural bristles.

Feed your dog eco-friendly food

According to an Environmental Working Group study, pets in the U.S. are contaminated with higher levels of toxic industrial chemicals than people. Make sure your dog is ingesting eco-friendly food brands like Newman’s Own Organics, which is made without using harmful pesticides, herbicides, or dangerous chemical additives, or Organix is a USDA organically certified pet food that is produced “without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, GMOs, antibiotics, or artificial preservatives.” Alternatively, consider making your pup a homemade meal to save on food costs and have optimal control over what they are eating.
