NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Dr. Anthony Fauci said that Americans can’t let their guard down as the coronavirus pandemic stretches into the fall and winter.
“We need to hunker down and get through this fall and winter, because it’s not going to be easy,” Fauci told a panel of doctors from Harvard Medical School on Thursday, according to NBC News.
The warning comes as the nation’s coronavirus death toll nears 200,000 and confirmed cases top 6 million.
Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases who has become a face of the nation’s pandemic response, said Americans need to continue the fight even after months spent social distancing and staying at home.
He compared the coronavirus to the AIDS epidemic that started in the 1980s.
“We've been through this before,” he warned. “Don't ever, ever underestimate the potential of the pandemic. And don't try and look at the rosy side of things.”
Fauci said it’s inevitable that COVID hotspots will continue to pop up across the U.S. even as regions like the tri-state see successes in beating it back.
“It’s really quite frankly depressing to see that because you know what's ahead,” he said.
