February 21 seems like a lifetime ago, a free-moving all-open society that we long to get back to as we all play our part and stay safely at home. Back before we were social distancing and living in an uncertain era, February 21 was a simpler, almost idyllic space and time compared to the pandemic we are facing now.
On that date, Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind took to the streets of San Francisco, filming a day in the life of skate culture with pro-skateboarder Cher Strauberry, for the band’s new video for “Ways.”
“It looks like a dream now, but one I want to get back to,” says Jenkins in a statement. The clip is seen through the eyes of the skater and trans icon, shot on a very different day than today. “The beauty of this moment is that everyone is living the creed of individuality and inclusion,” adds Stephan. “Seems like a good message for now and a dream we all need to aspire to make real again.”
“Ways” from Third Eye Blind had an exclusive World Premiere on Tuesday night on RADIO.COM, part of a special RADIO.COM LIVE event featuring the debut of the video, and a special at-home performance from the band.
Jenkins has been connecting with fans in the days since February 21, launching the Quarantine Kitchen Sessions every Tuesday on the band’s Instagram page. We also joined RADIO.COM earlier in the day for a special FANDEMIC Instagram Live, answering questions from fans along with RADIO.COM's Nicole Alvarez.
"If you look at this from the idea that you're safe at home, not stuck at home. I feel like this is a mindset. If you get your mind in the right place about this, that gets everybody healthy," Jenkins explains about this time, admitting that he dove into research to better understand the situation we find ourselves in.
"We're recognizing that, work has value and people who do jobs like bagging groceries are essential," he continues, about some of the opportunities that have arose from self-isolation. "I bet everybody who is listening right now has had more interaction with their neighbors in the last month than they have in the last five years. So there's a lot of possibilities to bring out our better selves."
